Folded paper skillfully arranged on loose scrapbook paper, as found. Possibly based on the paper folding patterns of Friedrich Froebel, the German educator who laid the foundation for modern education and created the concept of the kindergarten. To occupy the hands and improve the minds of students, Froebel introduced a series of some twenty “gifts” or “occupations," among them paper folding. Froebel himself emphasized folding squares and rectangles in order to deduce relationships between the areas of squares, rectangles and triangles, introducing basic principles of geometry.
Offered at Phloem Studio in collaboration with Ampersand Gallery. For years Ampersand, now located in Hood River, has collected, curated and exhibited found photography, printed visual ephemera and works on paper by unknown makers or outsiders. Historically used by artists to inspire and, in some cases, serve as raw material in the creative process, as collectors we can also view works of this nature as profound examples of the everyday creative impulse that informs daily life. Removed from their original context, found pieces like old snapshots, anonymous drawings, postcards and advertisements can thus be viewed, collected and presented in our homes as artworks in and of themselves.
